the news

What's new?

I got a puppy. He's a terror. I got him the day after Osama got shot. I thought about calling him Osama- because the white lab/poodle/african mutt mix does happen to be a little terrorist, who is slowly taking my sanity, ruining my routine and peeing all over my floor. I decided against the name- because I'm not that kind of American and I do happen to have a few Muslim friends. Instead, my little furry friend will be called Sully, short for Sullivan. As in Sully from the Monsters Inc movie. I know, my puppy isn't blue, but he is fluffy, is a monster and he does chase little children. He's great to have around. He's a bundle of energy who likes to cuddle, take naps on my lap as I work at the office and he plays well with the local dogs. He makes me feel settled, as though I do actually live in Uganda and this is my home.

I also moved. I'm in a better place that resembles a 2 bedroom apartment, with a ghetto kitchen, decent living room and a spare bedroom as well (Sully's room). It's still apart of a guesthouse, but they have a great staff, hot water and electricity. So no complaints yet. Hoping to hook up the satellite dish too so I can catch ESPN.

Work is about the same. Trying to get the right staff in place and loose the deadbeats. Too many excited, unemployed people to keep dead weight. I know that's harsh coming from a humanitarian aid worker, but I have bigger issues to worry about here. Like how to help 10,000 people become more food secure this year, despite predictions that aren't favorable for us. Things are progressing fine and seeds are in the ground and germinating. A few kinks along the way but nothing to derail.

I'm currently on R&R. It's been 2 pretty tough months frankly and it's nice to get a break. I'm back in the capital city, eating good food and resting. I got pounded with Malaria on Sunday and it was as miserable as I remember when I first got it in Malawi. It's an absolutely terrible disease that kills 320 Ugandan's a day. Thankfully, I (as a fully insured, wealthy ex-pat) had access to treatment. A shot in the butt and a few pills got me back in form. As unpleasant as the whole experience was, it was a great reminder of my health. Thank God I have been here nearly a year now, with no serious health snags. I am daily watched over and prayed for, and it shows.

So there it is. Consider yourself updated.

  1. Glad you are well and doing fine and have the company of that little puppy!! Malaria is no fun.. saw so much of it in Malawi and my partner and driver got sick while I was there, it was only by the grace of God i did not get it. My partner had a very rough time and was hospitalized for awhile. Yeah when you work overseas you have no time to get sick and no time to recover so keeping healthy is number one priority...you cant help others if you are sick. Praying for you Adam and so proud to call you my friend. Keep up the good work- food self sufficiency is the key goal to helping people become self supporting and not dependent on aid programs that may not be there in the future!! I just got back from amonth on Rosebud Sioux Reservation- got a stomach flu and my asthma deteriorated but i made it thru- wrote some curriculum for a violence prevention grant at a DMV shelter as well as worked with youth and elders...a blessing! carol
PS so glad you take breaks/RR it will geatly add to your longetvity in serving there.
