Drought

Unless your head is buried in the sand, you have probably heard about a pretty severe drought in the horn of Africa. To date this hasn't really impacted my program in northern Uganda. That is until today when WFP told me that that we have no food.

The nearest food available is in Zambia/Zimbabwe- but there is no guarantee we can get that food, it may go to worse off areas like Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia. For my program, my beneficiaries work on community projects and in exchange they get some food aid every 6 weeks. That is when there is food for them to receive. This will severely impact my programming and our relationships with communities, since they tend to only work for something. It will be a very interesting several months to say the least.

It is also very interesting to see the big picture and to understand the global systems that my program is apart of. It's also a bit of a downer because we have no idea when we can get food up here. We may need to switch to cash which is a big headache and has been a mess.

Pray for Karamoja because the rains have slowed down, and it's a crucial time for our crops to grow. Pray the drought stays out of Uganda. Pray for WFP as they respond to the horn of Africa drought.

P.S. A recent BBC article highlighting the places I work in- and my donor.
